Showtime!

The spring season for shows is in full swing! I have been to some wonderful shows in the last month! Huntsville City Schools are really raising the bar on performance, costumes, and theatrical makeup! Backstage was full of parent volunteers, students, and sometimes parents from another school or theatre group.  If you have a chance, please get out to see as many school shows as you can, it is a wonderful way to support our hardworking students, teachers, and parents, and an even better way to grow our community.

I LOVE backstage! I always wanted to perform regularly, but the butterflies in my stomach had other plans. So, I ended up on the tech side of things.  In sixth grade after a terrifying role as a silent mouse in AAA’s first production ever (Winnie the Pooh 1984), I became a stagecraft member. Ms. Deborah Fleischman found out I knew how to sew and put me to work on costumes. Although it was before clowns existed, we had plenty to learn in class. I learned alot in her classes and still use those skills today.

One of the things I love about backstage is the hive mind mentality. There are a ton of worker bees dressed in stage black pulling a show together in one seamless movement! Of course the goal is to make every transition apparently seamless, while trouble shooting missed cues, costume fails, makeup touch ups, and more. But when it all comes together, and you have that perfect show where everyone got it right its pure magic!

The Fig has been growing and I find that we are shifting into more independent, school,  local, and regional theatre productions. Our focus has been on helping Thespians better their craft through costumes, design, and theatrical makeup techniques and product.  We are offering design services and will be starting to produce costume rentals for entire shows ( in addition to keeping our individual rentals). Theatre is on the rise in Huntsville and we intend to shift with it in order to meet the needs of productions.

I recently designed, and stitched costumes for Pinocchio. Pinocchio is a production of Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theatre. The actors are using an original script; Peter-John Sligting, Schuyler Howie, & Penny Ewing, based on the Story by Carlo Collodi. Local Thespians and Fantasy students wrote the script to be performed at Fantasy ten years ago.  Back then Kevin O’Brien and Sarah Brown were cast as Fox and Cat. Now they are co-directing it with modest changes made. If you have the chance to see it there are tickets available PINOCCHIO TICKETS HERE!

The photographs on stage of dress rehearsal are by Jeff White Photography. . all backstage, and candid photos are by Fig Leaf Costumes. Jeff White is also for hire to photograph weddings, individual photos, head shots and more.

I also went to see Beauty and the Beast. This was Grissom High School’s very last show in the theater. Lydia Palmes did a fantastic job with loads of talent and help available to make a fantastical, magical show. All I can say is, I WILL NEVER  miss another Grissom show again! They will start fresh in their new school theatre this fall. I tried to take a lot of photos, but all of the kids were crying out of joy and sadness, so it was hard to capture a dry moment. I look forward to all of the wonderful work to come! Great job Grissom Theatre! The costumes and makeup were so fun!

I was also able to see The Little Mermaid at Huntsville High School.  Meghan Thompson did an incredible job. I believe there were 148 actors! They had wheelies, hover boards, and so many amazing costumes! The tail to legs scene was very clever wire work with a super quick change. The transitions were sop smooth it was almost as if there weren’t any. I was able to sit behind the sound board, and I loved seeing the students do all of the tech work. They really knocked it out of the park. The makeup was by Wynn Oldham, a Huntsville staple, when it comes to stage makeup. She invited me backstage to see the chaos, and we were able to watch much of the show together. The Auditorium was packed to the gills, which made for a lively, exciting show. And lastly, Scuttle really worked the crowd, the stage, the costume, the makeup, and the air with his flying on a wire. Great show!

Lastly, Faustus was a great show too! It was more adult in nature, but a much-needed classic. It was nice to help on a show that Huntsville doesn’t get to see very often. I advised UAH student, and lead costumer Kaylie Miller. She had a great concept for 1500’s Germany, and 68 costumes to source or stitch. It was a pleasure to help her costume the show. We hope you enjoyed the richness of the set, set dressing, lighting, and costumes as the tech team worked to create an antique look. The following stage photographs are also by Jeff White Photography, all candids are by Fig Leaf Costumes. UAH now offers a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre. Maybe you know someone who wants to major in theatre. Now they can do it in Huntsville! Check out their page HERE!

We look forward to what May has in store for us. We will do our best to bring something wonderful to the stage for you. have a great week!

Sincerely, Figgie

Hoppin’ into Spring

Things are getting busier at the Fig! I had a great time showing the makeup crew how to apply the beast prosthetics for Beauty and the Beast. Be sure to catch the show! There is still a whole weekend left. Buy tickets here!

I also had the privilege to show some technique to students from Arab Musical Theatre last month, as they prepared for their production of the Addams Family. The kids were great and put on a fantastic, seamless show! The costumes, set, makeup, and lighting were all phenomenal! I will never miss another AMT Production. The theatre was packed with families with barely a seat left. People drove all the way from Birmingham, Huntsville, Scottsboro and Cullman to see it. Make sure you catch the next one! I took a few photos of pre and post show. Enjoy.

I have had the privilege to design costumes for Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theater with their production of Pinocchio!  There is a really great group of parents and teens helping making the costumes from my designs. I think the donuts keep them coming back, but most likely the good company! It has been a pleasure to sit in on casting, rehearsals, and concept meetings. We have a show in just about a month, but the tickets are selling fast! Be sure to get yours ASAP, it is going to be a great show with a whale, a carnival scene, and a real live puppet of course! Here is a sneak peek!

The costuming class at Fantasy is doing great too! They are working on their cardboard puppet creations for Moppets, Poppets, and the Deep Blue Sea. They are learning how to use tools and design to make their sea creatures come to life. I cannot wait to show you their finished Jellyfish, Manta Ray, and Sea Turtle. All articulated of course!

I will have more next week as we look forward to Faustus at UAH, and Honk at Randolph School! Meanwhile have a great weekend and enjoy a show! We will see you at the shop!

Friday, Octobre 30th we went to OTBX for the T.A.P./OTBX meet and greet costume party. All beers on tap were $4 till close. Larry Mason and family were there, and lots of other great costumed guests. Bill Fowler and his crew did a bang up job in costumes provided by Fig Leaf Costumes! If you missed it don’t worry, we will have another one in the New Year! I have to say hanging out with my sister as an Amish brother was fun! She got more stares than laughs, but sometimes it is good to bring a little awkward to a party downtown, right? Living La Vida Local!

Afterwards we walked around downtown a little. We saw a mermaid and her dead sailor boyfriend. We saw Lance and friends at the Voodoo lounge. He is the White Rabbit, boy was it hoppin’!

My sister/brother had a great night judging the costume contest at Yellow Hammer brewery for Hammerween on Halloween night. somehow she ended up dancing on the bar with Jessica Rabbit later at Whiskey Bottoms! That is one liberal Amish gal!

Here is the road and Jo’s little bird shrine.

New Orleans was Amazing! After having the best breakfast ever at “Cake” bakery and cafe, we shopped a few junk shops and the French Market. Then we drove to Birmingham for the Dia de los Muertas Festival. It was nice to see the little celebration I used to attend and help with over a decade ago, grow into a big beautiful thing with major Latino and Hispanic representation. There was traditional music, food, art, altars and alot of cultural blending going on. it was Beautiful! I hope Huntsville can grow theirs to be a bigger more inclusive event. It just takes time. Anyhoo here is a great Instagram photo of me by “Jamie Maloy”! For more Birmingham photos of the event go to Instagram and search #dotdbirmingham or #dotdalabama. You can also add your loved ones names to the rollcall each year. It was good and sad to hear the names of my grandmother, sister Corina Louise Dominguez, and old friend Tonya West this year. There is something beautiful too about acknowledging their lives and deaths among hundreds of others who have lost dear ones.

Now for a little break with Kaffeeklatsch coffee and Pizzelle’s new Klatsch Bar. Yum. We will post soon about all of the new things we are doing locally, and we thank you for supporting “GOOD” local too!

Tutorial #1 is by Sara Loves. Although we love professional makeup artists, we like to support newbies too! Everyone has to start somewhere, right? Make sure you click LIKE if you like it!

You can use Lumiere cremes and powders to accomplish these looks. If you seal them in with Liqui set from Ben Nye or Final Seal, they will last 12 hours or more and keep a glassy “eye” look! This makeup gals tutorial can be found at Siobahn McDonnell. It is a great look! No pun intended!

Lastly, learn how to use our Woochie third eye prosthetic. We carry them in the shop and they are fairly easy to use. We have everything you need to apply, makeup, and seal them. I can predict that you will have an amazing Halloween with this look from Elli Macs SFX makeup. And you can use our third eye as a shortcut. Seeeee you in the shop!

Falling for Octobre!

Octobre is finally here! Although the shop stays busy all year round, we live for Octobre! Why? Because, everyone else is finally in the mood to dress up! We love coming up with new ideas, and bringing out the classics too! Here are some ideas from the first 4 days of Halloween. Because at Fig Leaf Halloween is a month long event. Come in and take a look around, ask us questions, tell us your ideas, boogie to the Halloween music, answer our spooky telephone and have a chat with our pet chatter teeth! There is plenty to keep you busy, while we help pull together your look! We cannot wait to see you, and see what ideas are in that lovely big pink brain of yours!

Here is Joanna in our 1950’s poodle skirt, as a sock hop gal!

imageimageRita dressed as a faerie tale milk maid. Old world faerie tales are cool costumes too. We have milk maids, Little Bo Peep, Little Boy Blue, and more.image

Joanna dressed as a fortune teller.imageWe gussied up the milk maid for an Old World Festival Gal with a flower headdress. They didn’t have raves or discos back then, but they still partied, right?
image Our beautiful new hooded bodysuits are made by Tony Diaz! He made this Stellar suit for us! It is great for voluptuous gals that want to make a bold statement. We named our alien “Zanzibar the Fierce”. There are all kinds of looks available with a little flexibility, and thinking outside of the planet.image Being a mummy was so fun! I went out with Cleopatra and Professor Phanco. We went to Sam & Gregs Pizzeria for dinner. We loved meeting fellow locals and families! I was sad to call it a wrap when we had to go! I could live in that costume. image We finished up at a local spot on the square. It felt a little like my tomb back home!image

Just to get you in the mood, here are a few links to die for, when it comes to zombies! You don’t have to use the alcohol based palettes, creme and cake palettes are just as effective for an afternoon jaunt, or an evening out. Our favorite makeup artist is Made U Look by Lex. She has a great zombie bite tutorial! We can show you what makeups to use for the same effects.  Click here or below on the pic! Make sure to click like on her video, and subscribe to her page. We love her style and hope you do too!
