Feeling Royal!

This month we designed and sewed a dress for Amanda Chapman in Tuscumbia. Anyone unfamiliar with her can find her 31 faces of Halloween posts HERE!  She is an incredible photographer, yet she dabbles in FX makeup like a goddess!

Recently she was selected as one of the top 30 artists for the NYX Face Challenge! The first challenge is royalty. Amanda asked if we had any royal dresses. we do of course! But, we decided to make her something special. Below are some process shots of making the dress week before last. But you can see the finished product in her challenge video.

We hope you love her look. If you do help her to the next round by voting and sharing. You can vote up to 3 times a day if you want. Enjoy!

Mardi Gras!

Happy Mardi Gras y’all! I have been loving the Instagram feeds of friends in New Orleans over the past week. One of my favorites is the Lundi Gras Red Beans Parade. Here is a more “mainstream” article about it. Enjoy! ARTICLE

I hope everyone here had a fantastic Mardi Gras Parade in Huntsville and Decatur! We saw some great theme requests come into the shop last week. We helped Abigail find the perfect “Paradise”  makeup for a zebra, and even dressed up  little red riding hood!

We had a fantastic weekend meeting over 800 drama students and educators at the Alabama Thespian Festival in Pelham over the weekend. We were able to provide demo makeup, teach kids about stage makeup and more! We will definitely go back next year! I will post more photos on the Facebook Page later.

Now for a couple of weeks in the shop before Spring Break hits. We are working hard on Pinocchio at Fantasy Playhouse Theatre, and helping with UAH’s Faustus. We will post more on how to see the shows as the time gets closer. Have a great week!

WE ARE NOT CLOSING!

img_4296It has recently come to my attention that the public thinks we are closing and going out of business. In light of local closings and movings such as,  The Artery, garden Cove, and Southerland Station, we may have accidentally been thrown into the mix. No one ever knows how a rumor gets started, but nothing could be further from the truth! We are Very, Very OPEN!

We will be taking more opportunities this year to travel and attend Theatre  related events such as the 2017 Alabama Thespian Festival this weekend. This will help us broaden our customer base and create stronger relationships to support theatre and stagecraft. We will also follow school closings for Spring Break, and Fall Break.  However, we will let you know via the website, Facebook Page, and Voicemail when we will have a Closed Day, so that you can plan for your costume and makeup needs.

Please let everyone you know that Fig Leaf Costumes is very OPEN for business!

In recent weeks, we have been very busy! Here is an idea of a few things we have been working on.

We designed and stitched Gena Rawdon’s  “Snow White” costume for Theater Huntsville’s  January production of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. We also went to see the show! if you missed it, catch their next production “Duck Hunter shoots Angel”! Buy tickets here,  “Theater Huntsville”

Sticking with a primary color theme we were asked by Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theater to pull together a costume for Composer Vajda’s presentation of “Compose Yourself” with the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra. we felt they needed a more specialized look. So we designed and created a costume that was child friendly, bright, and musical. we came up with “Treble”. We also went to see the performance! what an amazing presentation. Hundreds of kids were engaged with the orchestra, and they loved the show! We are so honored to have been asked to contribute to sharing the arts with children across Huntsville. You can find concerts, workshops, and classes for children through the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra HERE!

We are also working hard on designing costumes for Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theater’s Production of Pinocchio! It is a big job, lots of fun, and a complete honor to work with Fantasy again. You know how much we LOVE what fantasy does. You can find more info about available programming and tickets for children’s shows, and workshops on their website HERE!

Our lovely friend Larry Mason gifted the shop a little watercolor of our front door. He is working hard on drawing and painting architectural points of interest in Huntsville. We are excited that he included us in his ongoing series. You can contact him here if you have questions about his project. “Larry Mason”.

We also made a few new costumes for our shop. A mermaid, a purple poodle skirt. we also altered a steam punk pirate dress for a local pirate. we added ruffles, and pleats, and laces.

We also put together a ground-hog costume and  face for the Huntsville-Madison County’s visitor and convention Center for Groundhog’s Day. we worked with van Brown and his lovely actor for the event! Keep up to date with Huntsville events at the center HERE.img_7523

We also visited the Arab Musical Theater students and helped Janice Quillen, Ron Harris, and the kids with a little stage makeup demonstration for their upcoming production of the Addams family. They were great to work with, and even gave me a nice card with dinner. Thanks kids! I cannot wait to see the show. More info on their program and upcoming productions HERE!

So much is going on, I will have to make another post. Be sure though that we are OPEN and staying OPEN for as long as you will have us! Need a costume, stage makeup, masks, wigs or consulting? Give us a call or come by the shop! We love to talk costumes and theater! I will end with a few more photos from the shop and recent weeks. Enjoy!

Halloween is nearly here!

We would really like to thank everyone who has come in to find costunes, makeup, and accessories for Halloweenie!

We have loads of Ben Nye and Mehron available for character makeups. We have tons of glitter left and the candy pink and blue for Harlequin.

We have new wigs in too! Trump wigs are going fast, and pink kitty cat wigs from BoJack Horseman.

Need clown supplies? We literally have it all!!!! Wigs, makeup, rubber noses, and costumes!

Come look around, try things on, and join the fun!

Back in the Saddle!

I am so excited to be back at the shop! Thanks to everyone who came in last week! It was great to see new, and familiar faces and hear all about your theatrical projects and plans!

Curley, Daisy, and Zero the clowns came to visit! They are putting together an all new clown training class! You can earn your rubber nose at night in the Rocket City Clown Alley group. I will have more info when they solidify classes.

We also had some Gishwes players in the shop looking for costumes. If you aren’t in the know that means “Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World’s Ever Seen”! People compete in teams worldwide trying to take photos of odd combinations. For instance a victorian woman on a railway car. Like Maddy! She looked great in our getup!

Lastly, Halloween is just around the bend! I am getting packages weekly from our gigantic Halloween Order. There will be lots of new things to bring your Halloween costume to life. Come in early amd consult with me about what you want to be. There are so many ideas!

It’s great to be back! Thank you for supporting local, we hope to fill your costume needs for many years to come!

Best, Rita

Closed for Summer Inventory!

We hope you are having a great summer!

We will be closed from July 16th – August 1st for Summer Inventory and restructuring. We will be readying the shop for the Halloween season to make your experience even better this year!

Meanwhile, we have had a very busy summer at the shop, and teaching at Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Academy! We taught a stage makeup class of classic characters like Queen of Hearts, a Beast, and Frankenstein’s Monster.

Then we taught a cardboard costume construction class for age 10-12 year olds. We made an oversized fox and owl mask from a Wintercroft template.

We even had a Photo booth at the Flying Monkey’s Renaissance Festival. We took tons of awesome photos against our impromptu silk background. It was a big hit with attendees already costumed as well as people trying on our costumes.

Have a great summer and we will see you soon to help with all off your costuming and theatre makeup needs.

Mardi Gras and more!

We have had a busy winter in the last six weeks. There was a great David Bowie tribute party over at the Lowe Mill. I made a spaceman costume to wear. it was glorious wearing a costume that covered my face. Somehow, being anonymous allows a different kind of experience at a party. I was able to observe more of what was going on, it was great! I wore my “Diaz Drag Costuming” Galactic Bodysuit underneath, so I could still be spacey when I took off my helmet. Joanna dressed as a Bowie Space dandy, and we had a great time with old and new friends. My helmet made the rounds.

After all of that excitement, I had to practice my Picasso facepaint lesson for my students at Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theatre. we are working on color blocking. I LOVE FPCT! If you have not signed up for a class or workshop, you should! They offer a variety of stage and technical classes in theatre production from age toddler to adult. Click Here!

we also pulled all of the Easter Bunnies, suits, and vests from storage to clean, repair and ready for March. I definitely hopped to it this year, with a handmade fancy vest and bow tie for each one! Be sure to reserve yours before they are all booked up.

Then of course there were the Huntsville, and Decatur Mardi Gras Parades. I was only able to make it to Huntsville’s this year. It is still a baby as far as parades go. But, this year it was better, because they were allowed to throw beads. I also saw Krewes starting to express themselves beyond the “Party City” Purple, Gold, and Green theme. There were some really creative themes out there. The 1950’s gals, Cotton Candies, NYX, and more! I took some photos. Form your own Krewe next year, and come see us about a theme and costumes! Also, thanks to everyone who rented a costume from us. We appreciate you!

We are also starting to make Wizard of Oz and Emerald City costumes so, I am making OZ hats. Love that green glitter!

I also took a trip to Unclaimed Baggage for their 25% jewelry bling sale. My daughter helped me pick out loads of new costume jewelry to go with rentals at our shop. Plus we said hi to Hoggle from Labyrinth. he was super sad about Jareth the Goblin King passing away, but he showed us his bling collection, and made funny hand gestures with Mia!

Last but not least! we have NEW clown supplies in stock. Palettes, socks, and even fancy $300 Sz 12, Pink Leather, clowning boots on Sale for $100! The socks are only $5.oo a pair and come in a variety of designs and colors!

Have a great week, and see you in the shop!

Sincerely, Figgie
